the cat vomiting & hairball diary
Almost all cats vomit now and then. A pattern is harder to see. This diary puts each time on paper: when, what came up and how your cat was after. Your vet gets a clear history. It never diagnoses. Your vet does.

Merck Veterinary Manual says vomiting comes with effort first, such as drooling and retching. Regurgitation is passive, and the food is usually undigested. The page shows the difference, and lists what three vet sources say about how often is too often.

Cornell Feline Health Center says the vet starts with a thorough history from you. Dial A Vet says a simple vomiting diary helps find the cause faster. Count the log onto the one-page summary the night before the visit.

good questions.
How often is it normal for a cat to vomit?
Sources differ, so the diary shows each one. Cornell Feline Health Center says a cat that vomits more than once a week needs an exam. Texas A&M says see a vet for more than a couple of times a month. PetMD says frequent or ongoing vomiting is not normal. Ask your vet for the rule for your cat, and write it on page 2.
Is a hairball every week normal?
Cornell says a hairball every week or two is common. Two feline vets (St. Denis and O'Brien, 2017) say hairballs are not normal, and that cats that vomit more often than every 2 weeks are more likely to have gut disease. The hairball log gives your vet the real count.
What is the difference between vomiting and regurgitation?
Merck Veterinary Manual says vomiting is forceful, with drooling, repeated swallowing and retching first. Regurgitation takes no effort, and the food is usually undigested. A short phone video helps your vet tell them apart (Dial A Vet). The diary has a page for this.
When is cat vomiting an emergency?
Dial A Vet lists several vomits in a few hours, being unable to keep water down, blood or coffee-ground vomit, string at the mouth or rear, a possible lily or medicine, weakness or hiding, a painful belly, and a male cat that strains in the tray. Cornell adds repeated retching with nothing coming up. Page 2 lists these signs.
Does the diary tell me what is wrong, or which medicine or food to use?
No. The diary never diagnoses, never names a medicine or a diet and never gives a dose. Cornell says never to give a cat a laxative without a vet. The diary has a page to copy each medicine exactly as the label says.
What should I write down?
Dial A Vet says to write the date, the timing against meals and what came up, and to take photos or a short video. St. Denis and O'Brien advise a calendar, and weighing the cat at every visit. The vomit log, the month grid and the weight page cover each of these.
