the reactive dog trigger and walk log
Bad walks stay in memory, and small wins do not. This log records each trigger, the distance and the angle, so you, your trainer and your vet see the real pattern and the real progress. It never sets the plan. Your vet and a qualified behaviour professional do.

one line per trigger.
Write the trigger, the distance, the angle and a 0 to 5 score. The Toronto Humane Society protocol logs distance and angle, because a head-on approach is harder than an angle. After a few weeks, the pattern shows.

Dogs Trust says that stress hormone levels can take 48 to 72 hours to drop, and a dog may react to less in that time. Plan rest, play and short quiet walks, and write how your dog settles.

In one review of referral cases, about a third of dog behaviour cases involved a painful condition (Mills and others, 2020). Bring the log, the pain signs you ticked and a video of your dog walking.

good questions.
What is a reactive dog?
Dogs Trust describes a reactive dog as one that barks, lunges and pulls towards other dogs, people or things outside. It is a big emotional response: the dog may feel worried, frustrated, excited or overwhelmed. Reactive dogs are not always aggressive, but Cornell University warns that reactivity can turn into aggression, so take it seriously.
Why does my dog react more on some days?
Dogs Trust says that after a big reaction, stress hormone levels can take 48 to 72 hours to drop. In that time your dog may react to less. This is called trigger stacking. The log has a 3-day plan after a big reaction, and a calendar so you can see these runs.
Does the log tell me what distance to train at?
No. Your trainer or behaviourist sets the plan, and the session plan page is for them to fill in. The facts on the pages say why distance matters: the Toronto Humane Society protocol works where the dog sees the trigger but can still respond to cues. If your dog reacts, you are too close.
Should I see a vet first?
Yes. Dogs Trust advises a vet check at the start, and soon if your dog suddenly started to react. In one review, about a third of referred dog behaviour cases involved a painful condition (Mills and others, 2020). The log has a pain and health checklist and a one-page summary for the visit.
Which training methods does the log follow?
Only reward-based methods. AVSAB, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, says aversive methods should not be used, and lists choke, prong and shock collars and flooding as things to avoid. The Merck Veterinary Manual says punishment and confrontation are more likely to lead to fear and aggression.
How do I get the log after I pay?
Wix, our checkout provider, emails you a download link as soon as your payment goes through. The link works for 30 days. Download the ZIP file and save it. All sales are final; if your file is broken or never arrives, we fix it fast.
