Feeding a dog and a cat in the same house: how to keep meals separate

In a house with a dog and a cat, dinner can turn into a race. The dog finishes first. Then the dog finishes the cat’s bowl too. It looks harmless, but over time both pets can end up on the wrong diet.
Why do dogs and cats need separate food?
Dogs and cats have different nutrition needs. Cats cannot make enough of their own taurine, so they must get it from their food. Dog food is made for dogs, and it may not have enough taurine for a cat.
The Tufts veterinary nutrition team makes the same point. Pets in one home often cannot share one food. Dog food does not have every nutrient a cat needs.
The problem also works the other way. When one pet eats another pet’s food, it gets extra calories. The other pet misses part of its meal. In a home where one pet is on a special diet, a shared bowl can undo the vet’s plan.
Signs that meals are mixing
You may not see the food theft happen. Look for these signs:
- The cat’s bowl is empty, but the cat asks for food again soon after
- The dog gains weight, and the food amount has not changed
- A pet on a special diet does not improve as the vet expected
- You find the dog standing on a chair near the cat’s feeding place
Five ways to keep meals separate
1. Feed the cat up high
Most dogs cannot reach a counter, a shelf or the top of a cat tree. Cats like to eat in a high, quiet place. This is often the simplest fix.
2. Use a door or a gate
Feed the pets in different rooms, and close the door. Or put up a baby gate that a cat can jump over and a dog cannot. A door strap that holds a door open just wide enough for a cat also works.
3. Feed at set times
Do not leave food down all day. Tufts suggests making the time food is available shorter, step by step, until each meal is short. Put the bowls down, wait, then take them away.
Set times also help you notice a change in appetite. That is useful information for your vet.
4. Try a selective feeder
Some automatic feeders open only for one pet’s microchip or collar tag. They cost more, but they help most when one pet is on a special diet, or when you are not home at meal times.
5. Write the rules down
Rules fail when a sitter, a partner or a visitor does not know them. Write who eats where, how much, and when. Put it where everyone can see it.
An example plan for a dog and a cat
| Time | Lowki (dog) | Roofy (cat) |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00 | 1 cup kibble, in the kitchen | ¼ cup dry, on the counter |
| 18:00 | 1 cup kibble, in the kitchen | ¼ cup wet, in the office, door closed |
| After meals | Bowl washed and put away | Bowl washed and put away |
Notice the exact amounts. “One scoop” is not clear when there are three scoops in the cupboard. Weigh a scoop once, and write the grams or cups.
Questions to ask your vet
- Is my cat’s food complete and balanced for its age?
- How many calories should each pet eat in a day?
- Is it safe for my pets to share any food, for example treats?
- How fast should I change a food, if I need to change it?
Write the rules once
Our free sitter sheet tool puts each pet’s meals on one page for anyone who feeds them. Add each pet once. The tool builds the page and can send it to your sitter.
For the full picture, the Household Command Binder has a Feeding section. It holds food amounts in cups or grams, a feeding map to mark who eats where, treat limits for each day, a food change log and a reorder list.
Ask your vet before you change a pet’s diet.
Questions
Is it a problem if my cat eats a little dog food?
A stolen bite now and then is unlikely to matter. As a regular diet, dog food can leave a cat short of nutrients such as taurine. Ask your vet if your cat eats it often.
Is it bad if my dog eats cat food?
Cat food is often richer in protein and fat. Regular snacking adds calories and can upset some dogs' stomachs. Feed the cat out of the dog's reach.
Do I need a microchip feeder?
Not always. A high shelf or a baby gate works for many homes. A feeder that opens only for one pet helps most when a pet is on a special diet.
Can I free-feed my cat if I also have a dog?
It is hard. Food that stays down all day is food the dog can find. Set meal times make it much easier to keep each pet on its own diet.
